Ink 08

Uncle bear is excited to go see his new plane!

Tools of the trade. part 01

I just got some new brush pens from japan. The 3 on the top have synthetic  hairs, they are about 15$~20$ each.
I use most of the time the Pentel Brush pen. Which is a fantastic pen.

But my it is starting to "engorge" itself after a few minutes and I lose the thinnest line that I could have when I just picked up the pen. Which means I can only work a few minutes at a time... not ideal.
My theory is that air is getting in the cartridge and is "pushing " the ink out too quickly. Maybe the cartridge's plastic is too soft and letting air in? I'm not sure but when I open the bottom of the pen (where the cartridge is), the cartridge is often loose.

I use to use the normal fude pen to write in japanese, but this time my in-laws brought me the smaller one to test.
The 3rd pen from the top on the picture is the Kuretake fude pen (くれ竹 筆ペン) it is very similar to the Pentel.  it feels a little better, the plastic seems to be a little stronger, the hairs are a little softer and it writes very consistently (maybe because it is brand new :) ). But it is so smooth that it gets hard to open! no grip! It does look really nice.

I really enjoy the pentel ink though, really black and thick. So both the pentel brush pen and the pentel fude pen have a great advantage in my opinion.

The last two on the picture are very cheap pens (about a $ each), the tip is made out of foam and the ink is not very covering. (I'll use them to fill surfaces, :)).

Now I need to get some nicer paper.

By the way, muddy colors have a great post on inking

24, this cappuccino better be real good!

how to get better at inking

 From Jake Parker's tumblr page:

1) Draw 100 somethings in ink. (fish, robots, portraits…you decide)
2) Draw an ink drawing every day for a month.
3) Draw a 24 page comic in ink.

With Inktober I'm jumping to #2, but I'll do 1 in november and see if I have time to do #3.

Skin tones

Playing around with different type of skin colors. (CS5, basic brushes). Just layering color very softly. I tried to keep a consistent lighting setup (key light, fill and rim light)
Trying to understand what other artist are doing.
My good friend Andrew Arconti showed me some tricks with the soft light blending mode that I', dying to try. I'll try to post some result soon. and application of this page on a model.

Old technique, new twist

I really like this idea. First because I still really love the physical aspect of film. Not what you see but the one one that you can touch. It is something that I really miss from my first job in motion Pictures, back when Pacific Title still existed. there were only few computers but still a lot of noisy machines that dealt with film. My goof friend Mark Freund was my supervisor then, he was always looking at film print and tell us how much color we needed to add or remove.
As much as I am a digital addict and love computer, there will be always a place in my heart for film.
Second, I enjoy when people mix technique like these, it is an effect that has been seen a lot but revisited in an interesting way.

R.I.P Ray Harryhausen 1920 -2013

"I'm very happy that so many young fans have told me that my films have changed their lives. That's a great compliment. It means I did more than just make entertaining films. I actually touched people's lives -- and, I hope, changed them for the better." - Ray Harryhausen

I remember seeing Sinbad (1958) and Jason and the Argonauts (1963) on an old 16 mm projector. I can't remember if it was my dad or someone else that set it up, but I remember that I got hooked right away. Since then I always loved fantasy movies... still do! :)

Kathrine Switzer - boston marathon 1967

I Love Superheroes: Wonderwoman

"In 1967, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to run the Boston marathon. After realizing that a woman was running, race organizer Jock Semple went after Switzer shouting, “Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers.” However, Switzer’s boyfriend and other male runners provided a protective shield during the entire marathon. The photographs taken of the incident made world headlines, and Kathrine later won the NYC marathon with a time of 3:07:29."  I'm always amazed to realize that things like that happened not long ago.

interresting apparatus

I know he/she could have done this easily in After effects or photoshop. but I like the idea of trying to keep it "physical".
I also think that more we, as a society, advance in virtual/digital world, more you'll find people to find ways to transform it to physical.

Very interesting video, I would like to find more info on it. But it shows very well how subtle change in our perception can affect our understanding of space.

2d FX animation

Last summer my dad came to visit with my little sister. Not only is was great to finally have my father in my house, but it was also great to hang out with him.
We talked a lot about art and more specifically about animation. He showed me which software he is using to teach animation and a little on how to use it.
The main software he is using is called TVpaint. One thing that I really enjoy about it is that you can start pretty quickly to animate. I'm not going to do a full review of it now. but I wanted to say that i never understood why some software developer try to reinvent the wheel. If you really want to show how good you are, make your software intuitive and user friendly. If that means you have to follow some standards so be it. there are few things in TV paint that are not easy to do. per example, select and move your selection... basic!
anyway, here are some of my animations.

I'll post more when I have more..
